Review of Frozen

So I finally got the chance to watch Disney's Frozen. Everyone's been talking about it so much. I've heard both positive and negative things about it. Mostly the negative things come from angry people on Tumblr about how there are no POCs (people of color) in the movie claiming it to be racist, however, the movie takes place in norther Europe where the dominant race is white. So I don't understand that. Anyway, racism aside, I was super stoked to finally watch this because I have loved all the 3-D films that the Walt Disney Animation Studios has put out so far such as Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Bolt (not so much Chicken Little), but it seemed to have fallen short on what I like in a movie. Also, it was loosely based on The Snow Queen, which was a favorite of mine when I was younger. I watched it so many times. Also the voice of the lead female was Kristen Bell, my favorite female actor of all time. What about this movie should I not like?! Well apparently a lot.

So Frozen was loosely based on The Snow Queen, which was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid. This one was about two sister princesses. One with magical ice powers, Elsa, one without, Anna. When playing, Else accidentally harms Anna and she almost dies. She is healed by some trolls and warns the family to never let fear control Elsa or her powers will get out of control. Sure enough the girls grow older and Elsa has locked herself away fearful to harm anyone ever again but her powers become out of control when she is made queen triggered by Anna announcing her engagement to a man she knew for only one day, turning their land into a frozen wonderland. Anna makes it her mission to go find Elsa to fix everything.

This movie sounds so great when setting it up, but that seemed to be the issue with the film. It just took a lot of time to set up and not a lot of time to resolve anything. You didn't get to know the characters in depth. There was no character building. It was just kind of like, here's our princesses, hope you like them. Elsa has some issues, but you won't really get to understand those. Here's an ugly ass snowman with absolutely no point to the movie other than delivering some good jokes and having you laugh at his ignorance to what heat will do to him. The character Christof was so cute, but he felt just like a regeneration of Flynn Rider from Tangled, just a bit "oafier". I just felt as if everything had been regurgitated and the story just had issues taking off on it's own.

On top of everything, there was a very large soundtrack behind this movie almost edging on musical level. However, none of the music seemed to fit the situation or the mood. Some of it felt like they were just singing to sing. Like a drinking game where you have to sing for the rest of the night or you have to take another shot. And the scene where Anna's sweet song sings against Elsa's fearful song clashes terribly. Usually two different songs that are sung butt up against one another are meant to melt and make a smooth melody, but this just felt like two people were trying to outsing one another with punk rock versus country. It just came out terrible in my opinion.

I wasn't satisfied with the movie until the very end. However, I was still unhappy with that because it seemed to have been wrapped up far too quickly. The story seemed to have trouble being built, reaching climax, but had no trouble going down that resolution slope being tied up in a sloppy bow, and thrown out in theaters. Perhaps the production team just said, "Forget it! You gave us a deadline, we're not done, but here! Here! Just take it!". I don't know.

The one thing I did appreciate was that an act of true love wasn't necessarily in the form in which you expect it to be in. However, when they first proposed that she needed an act of true love to cure her, I instantly guessed the ending, but assumed they wouldn't go down that route because they always go with the mushy love stuff. So I was very happy they actually went with what they did.

However, it was not a saving factor for the rest of the movie. Despite all the negative things I've said, it wasn't a terrible movie. It was just not reaching my expectation bar, which I may have subconsciously set really high due to my love for The Snow Queen, Kristen Bell, and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Overall, I give it *** out of ***** stars.
Not bad.
